Through the Lens: Capturing Confidence and Authenticity in Pittsburgh
A Creative Beginning
For Pittsburgh-based photographer Thomas Evans, photography began as a practical solution rather than a planned career path. As a Creative Director and Graphic Designer, he often needed specific imagery for projects that he couldn't find elsewhere, so he started creating it himself. What began out of necessity has grown into a passion that has spanned more than a decade.
Finding Purpose Through Portraits
Today, Evans specializes in editorial-style portraits and headshots, describing his work as having "a little edge and a lot of fun." While he values the artistic and technical aspects of photography, it is the connection with clients that motivates him most. Helping people feel confident and authentically represented through his images is what keeps him inspired.
A Studio-Centered Approach
A dedicated studio photographer, Evans enjoys the control and creativity that a studio environment provides. His goal is to create images that are both polished and personal, allowing each subject's unique personality to shine through.
Creating Memorable Experiences
When asked about his favorite shoot, Evans says, "The next one." However, one recent session stands out. He was able to arrange access to one of Pittsburgh's beloved theaters and concert halls for a senior portrait session with a student passionate about musical theater. The surprise location transformed the photoshoot into a memorable experience and remains one of his favorite projects.
Dream Locations and Inspirations
If given the opportunity to photograph anywhere in the world, Evans would choose either the vibrant energy of Times Square in New York City or the breathtaking openness of Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats. While Times Square would challenge his introverted nature, the Salt Flats offer the kind of natural light that photographers dream about.
Evans would also love the opportunity to photograph actress Elisabeth Moss, whose powerful facial expressions and emotional range he greatly admires.
The Drive to Keep Creating
Like many creatives, Evans admits there is no real "off switch." He is constantly brainstorming ideas for future projects and photoshoots. Yet among all the influences in his career, the person he credits most is his father, who placed a camera in his hands when he was 14 years old. More than 40 years later, Evans still carries that inspiration with him, proving that a single act of encouragement can spark a lifelong creative journey.
